| Cataloged specimens number about
1.5 million specimens in over 104,800 cataloged lots. Currently the
Fish Division has about 35,000 uncataloged lots. We have collections from
47 of the 50 United States. Representation is strongest in the Lake Erie
and Ohio River drainages with substantial holdings from the rest of the
Great Lakes and Mississippi River drainages. Vouchers obtained by the head
curator and other collectors include collections from Canada,
Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Brazil, Uganda, Kenya, China, Japan, Taiwan, Russia, Poland, Australia, Germany, (or) Canada, Mexico, Central America, South America, Africa, Asia and Europe. A large skeletal collection is maintained and constantly being added to. A small but growing genetic collection includes fin clips, muscle plugs or whole specimens stored in 95% EtOH. The head curator has built up a nice collection of fossil fishes from several of the western United States, Canada and Mexico. |
| The Ohio (state) collection of fishes is
very large and thoroughly documented in part through Milton Trautman's
book Fishes of Ohio published in 1957 and updated with a new edition in
1981 (Trautman, 1957; 1981). Catalogued specimens (58,000 lots) from every
drainage system in Ohio are present. The collection is well represented in
Ohio River and Lake Erie specimens. Nearly all the historical vouchers for
fish populations now considered threatened and endangered in Ohio are
in the collection. The type collection from State waters consists of
paratypes of 10 species (262 specimens) from 6 genera (4 families). The
entire type collection has specimens from 7 states and Canada representing
18 species (291 specimens) from 9 genera (5 families). Fish Species in the Fish Division (Currently Under Construction) Please contact the Associate Curator for data requests. Information pertaining to data requests is linked here for your perusal: OSUM Fish Division Data Request Policy |
