Mission and Purpose of the Fish Collection

It is the mission of the Museum of Zoology Fish Division to build a strong representative collection of North American freshwater fishes with secondary strengths in Mexico and Central America. To build a strong collection from lakes, rivers and streams of Ohio with the best documentation available; this includes a repository for all the states' rare, threatened and endangered voucher specimens. To maintain an ongoing relationship with the state of Ohio agencies involved in fish research. These include Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency Division of Surface Waters.

RESEARCH COLLECTION OF FISHES

Fish Collection Facility

The Fish Collection is housed in 6000 square feet of space in rooms 2600, 1690 and 1686 of the Museum of Biological Diversity on Ohio State University's West Campus Area. The building was recently renovated (1992). Improvements were made in all steel shelving, expandable for future growth; climate control, lighting of the collection and systems for fire protection were part of the renovation plans.

The research collection of fishes consists of the following components:

Cataloged Research Collection of Fishes - Alcohol Stored

Cataloged Osteological Collection of Fishes - Cabinet Stored

Teaching Collection of Fishes - Alcohol Stored

Uncataloged Research Collection of Fishes - Alcohol Stored

Subfossil Fish Collection from Archaeological Sites in Ohio

The research and teaching collections of the Fish Division in the Museum of Biological Diversity have been made available to the scientific community and the interested public by the Fish Curator and Collection Manager. We provide loans, teaching materials and informational tours of the Fish Division to professional and lay visitors, University students and classes as well as secondary school and high school classes. In addition many unknown specimens brought or sent to the Fish Division have been identified by the curator as a public service.

The fish collections are primarily used as a resource for systematics research and publication, laboratory teaching at the university level and for public education. The major objective in building the collection was to provide research material to support the graduate program in systematic ichthyology. The collections are used as a basis for comparative studies, geographic range information, ecological assessments and environmental impact statements. Voucher specimens are deposited with the collection by a number of researchers and agencies to anchor reports and publications. Repository of molecular work, including frozen tissue collections are now part of the collection facility.

The Fish Division follows established procedure for the management of fish collections and their associated information as endorsed by the American Association of Museums and the Association of Systematics Collections. Policies for acquisitions, documentation and care of collections, loans, access to collections, ethics and conflicts of interest are according to set standards.

Research and teaching specimens are made available on loan to qualified users for research and classroom purposes.

Fish Database

The collection is currently catalogued on computer, so all specimen catalog  numbers and their collection records are entered using a Specify program customized for The Ohio State University Collection. The systems information is easily transferred to a gopher server for access over the internet. A majority of historic records (58,000 lots) of the State Collection of Ohio is now computerized and waiting for transfer to the Fish Division's web site.  Total number of lots cataloged on computer stands at more than 105,600.  Total number of specimens cataloged on computer is approximately 1.5 million.
