OCAFS awards Ohio students and professionals who excel in aquatic research.  Awards include the Ohio Aquatic Sciences Scholarship, the NCD/OCAFS Student Travel Grant and the Milt Austin Award.  At the Ohio Fish and Wildlife Conference, OCAFS recognizes the "Best Aquatic Poster" and the "Best Aquatic Paper."

The Ohio Aquatic Sciences Scholarship was created by the OCAFS in 2005 to foster the academic development of future fisheries and aquatic science professionals. It pools generous contributions from the OCAFS, Ohio BASS Chapter Federation, Muskies Inc.-Cleveland Chapter, Ohio Central Basin Steelheaders, and The Ohio Smallmouth Alliance to help defray the housing expenses of outstanding college students attending OSU-Stone Laboratory's summer courses. Recipients for summer 2007 are: John Tallman, BS in Biology, University of Findlay (applying to enter grad school at OSU), award: $1,000, enrollment: Ichthyology term 1, Fish Ecology term 2; Matthew Williams, Biology major, The Ohio State University, adviser: Dr. David Wells, award: $300, enrollment: Ichthyology term 1, Fish Ecology term 2; Matthew Crowell, Fisheries & Wildlife Major, The Ohio State University, adviser: Dr. David Johnson, award: $200, enrollment: Ichthyology term 1, Limnology term 2;  For organizations wishing to contribute, please contact Mike Wilkerson. Student Travel Grant
The Ohio Chapter participates in this program in to provide funding for students to attend the annual North Central Division meeting who might not otherwise be able to attend the meeting.  The grant is designed to give students the opportunity to attend the annual North Central Division meeting.  

Larry Hart Scholarship
OCAFS also promotes the Larry Hart Scholarship awarded annually by the Ohio Wildlife Officers Fraternal Order of Police and the Twin Valley Rod and Gun Club. Deadline for application is March 15th annually.  Click here for more information.

Milt Austin Award
This (2007) is the eleventh year that OCAFS has offered the Milt Austin Aquatic Science Award at the Ohio State Science Fair, which is held annually at The Ohio State University.

1st place winner - Mr. Joseph Askew a Sophomore from St. Vincent St. Mary in Akron. Mechanism of population equilibrium in Daphnia.

2nd place winner - Ms. Sarah Griffith a Senior from Graham High School in St. Paris. The inhibition and stimulation of growth in amphibians.

3rd place winner - Mr. Kelsey Lecerf a Sophomore from St. Vincent St. Mary in Akron. The effect of ultraviolet light on the development of Daphnia pulex.

Honorable Mention - eighth grade student, Mr. Kyle Siefker from Bluffton Middle School in Bluffton. What type of weather is best for fishing?

Honorable Mention - eighth grade student, Ms. Stephanie Wong from Hathaway Brown in Shaker Heights. Cleveland water pollution: Daphnia as a bio-indicator.

Best Aquatic Poster and Paper
Congratulations to the 2005 Ohio Fish and Wildlife Conference award winners!  The 2006 OFWMA Conference award winners are scheduled to be announced at the 2007 winter meeting.

Results for the 2005 OFWMA meeting:

The “Best Aquatic Paper” recipient was entitled “Will Contamination Problems Keep You From Eating Ohio’s Fish?" by Ray Petering, Mylynda Shaskus (presenter), and Mark Smith.

The “Best Aquatic Poster” winner was entitled “Evaluation of Transect Length and Sample Size for Acoustic Surveys in Small Reservoirs." by R. Scott Hale and Donald J. Degan.
