Hello and thanks for your interest in my research. We work on enzymes called topoisomerases. These are nuclear proteins in animals (and plants as well as bacteria) that do some very strange things to DNA; namely, they introduce short lived breaks in the DNA backbone. Other than that, what is so interesting about topoisomerases? Well, for one thing, topoisomerases evolved to assist DNA unwinding that attends events such as transcription and DNA replication (and repair); thus, topoisomerases are essential for actuation and handling of genetic material. In addition, we know that certain drugs interfere with the action of topoisomerases on DNA. Such drugs are effective in treating cancer and many topoisomerase active agents are used clinically to kill tumor cells. There is significant potential for new, anticancer drugs that target these enzymes. We need to learn as much as possible about the enzymes and the drugs that cause them to 'turn against' malignant cells. As a basic science group, we are approaching this problem using the current tools of biochemistry and molecular biology. To get a more technical description of projects go to Research.
This web page is really designed primarily for other researchers who are interested in specific projects that are going on in the lab. Along with the science, I have included a number of pictures to allow a virtual tour of the lab facilities and the staff. An additional area of interest includes the papers that are either in press or submitted for publication. These pages will give you a detailed view of recent scientific output from my lab,
I often get requests from various administrators and collaborators/colleagues to provide up to date information on our recent papers, my CV and grant support history and related information. If you are interested in accessing this information directly, please go to the following:
