With its own telephone company, post office, bus system and police force, Ohio State's main campus functions as a city within the city of Columbus, Ohio . With the Wexner Center for the Arts, two Student Unions and several recreational facilities, including The Schottenstein Center, RPAC and The Jesse Owens Recreation Centers, the University offers a multitude of opportunities for virtually all types of recreation, arts and entertainment. Over 500 student organizations bring students together for academic, artistic, ethnic, political, recreational, and religious purposes. The underwater hockey club, Medieval and Renaissance Festival, world tour concerts, fitness centers, film series and Big Ten conference sports are just a few of the many activities which you can enjoy on campus.
Columbus, the capital of Ohio, is the nation's fifteenth largest city. Newsweek named Columbus one of the top ten cities in which to work and live in the '90's and one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. A ''big little'' city, with a metro area population of over one million, Columbus combines the diversity of urban life with the friendliness of a small town. Art galleries, historic districts, museums, parks, performing arts, restaurants, shopping and sports activities abound and are easily accessible with the extensive public transportation system (to which a minimal fee allows students full access). The OSU Buckeyes, New York Yankees AAA team, the Clippers, the NHL Bluejackets, and the MLS Crew all call Columbus home. Located in the center of Ohio , Columbus is a short trip from other metropolitan areas such as Cincinnati, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Detroit.
