It is the philosophy of the faculty and the Graduate Studies Committee that all doctoral students actively studying in the MCDB Program should be provided with financial support by either the Program or by their research advisor. Most incoming students are supported by a Graduate Associateship (GA) through the program which carries a competitive stipend. In the second year, GAs normally teach in the General Biology Program for a quarter. International students must pass the SPEAK test in order to be awarded teaching associateships. Certification must be obtained, either through the SPEAK test or (depending upon the results of the SPEAK test) subsequent English-as-a-Second-Language courses, by the end of the third quarter of enrollment.
Outstanding incoming students are eligible for a variety of fellowships and supplemental support, such as University Fellowships. To be eligible for fellowships, the applicant must indicate interest by checking the appropriate box on the application form. Applications received after January 15 for Domestic students and November 28 for Interational students are not eligible for Fellowships.
Associateship and Fellowship awards are accompanied by Fee Authorizations that cover academic tuition and fees (a quarterly value of over $2,900 for Ohio residents and over $6,900 for non-residents) except for the special, unlimited city bus pass, which carries a quarterly fee of $9.00, a student activity fee of $15.00, and fitness facility fee of $78.00. Most senior students in MCDB are supported by their advisors' faculty research grants as Graduate Research Associates (GRAs). These carry the same stipend level as GTA positions, but duties are related to funded research projects. Students nearing the end of their training are eligible for several special fellowships or research associateships, including the Presidential Fellowship, administered by the Graduate School, and the Dean's Research Associateship, administered by the College of Biological Sciences. In both cases, students must be nominated by the Graduate Studies Committee to be eligible.
The minimum stipend for MCDB students during the 2005-06 year was $22,140.
