Research Interests

My interests lie primarily in studying the plankton ecology of freshwater systems.  Specifically, I am interested in the factors that regulate phytoplankton abundance at different times of the year, particularly cyanobacterial blooms.  I am also interested in how exotic species influence the communities that they invade, with emphasis on zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) in Lake Erie.  Included with these main themes are Biocomplexity - the study of how biology, chemistry, physics and socioeconomic contributions of humans interact; and the ecology of harmful algal blooms and the factors that promote these blooms.
