Elizabeth Gross

Professor Elizabeth L. Gross passed away after a short illness on June 27, 2007. She is survived by her loving husband, Bob, family members, and numerous friends and colleagues. Dr. Gross retired from her position as Professor a year earlier after 39 years of service to the Department and The Ohio State University. Her research program at Ohio State had been primarily focused on the study of the structure and function of metalloproteins involved in photosynthetic electron transport, namely plastocyanin, a water-soluble copper-containing redox protein, and cytochrome f, membrane-bound c-type cytochrome. Plastocyanin accepts electron from cytochrome f and donates them to P700 in the Photosystem I complex. Dr. Gross and associates have studied in detail the interaction between these proteins and the nature of this biologically essential electron transport process using both experimental and computational approaches. Dr. Gross has served as a dedicated classroom instructor in many areas of biology, biochemistry and biophysics over her long career at Ohio State. She also generously served the Department and University in many ways including her service as the Director of the Biophysics Graduate Program for nearly a decade. She played a major role in the development of the program and its “open architecture” with regards to the curriculum. Dr. Gross, a dedicated scientist and teacher, continued to conduct research and contractual teaching in the department until her death. Her many contributions have positively impacted this university and she shall be missed.
