Summer
Undergraduate Research Program
Summer Undergraduate Research Program
(SURP)
in the Department of Biochemistry
The Department of Biochemistry at The
Ohio State University is pleased to announce the continuation
of a summer internship program to enhance participation of undergraduate
students in laboratory research. This faculty-mentored research program
will enable undergraduates enrolled at The Ohio State University to
engage in an original research project for 10 weeks during the
summer. During the following autumn quarter, the participants
are required to present a seminar describing their findings to the students
and faculty in the department.
Who should apply: Undergraduates who are seriously considering
a research career in the biological sciences in either an academic
or industrial setting are strongly encouraged to apply. In
addition to the hands-on laboratory research experience, it
is expected that interactions with faculty, postdoctoral fellows
and graduate students in the department will foster new mentoring
relationships and long-term research interests.
General criteria: At the time of application, students
must be in their sophomore or junior year at The Ohio State
University. Although preference will be given to students
who have declared Biochemistry as their major, other
interested undergraduates are welcome to apply. Because the
intent of this program is to provide students with an intense
research experience for the summer, a full-time commitment (40
hours/week, minimum) is expected. Thus, students are expected
not to be enrolled in classes or to be engaged in other employment
during the summer in which they participate in this program,
which is one of the reasons why stipends are awarded.
Financial support: A stipend (recently $3,000) will
be awarded to students participating in the program. A limited number
of stipends are available each summer.
Application procedure: Applications must include a letter of interest,
a statement of career goals, and letters of recommendation from
two faculty members who can comment on the academic credentials
of the candidate. The Selection Committee will attempt to match
a student with a faculty mentor if the student is interested
to work on an ongoing research project of a certain faculty
member. For due consideration, applications must be
received by the 15th of April during the year in which the student
intends to participate.
More information regarding the
application procedure can be accessed HERE.
Again, please note that his program is reserved for students enrolled at The Ohio
State University.
The application period for the Summer 2008 program
begins March 1, 2008. The application deadline is April 15th, 2008 for this summer's
competition.
