Miscellaneous Notes on Gene Expression
Gene = length of DNA that carries a message for a protein or specific type of RNA
The paradigm of gene expression:
DNA --> RNA --> Protein
DNA --> RNA = TRANSCRIPTION
- RNA polymerase must be able to bind to promoter of gene for transcription to start
- Transcription regulated by many different factors (e.g., environmental signals)
RNA --> Protein = TRANSLATION
- Ribosomes and tRNAs and amino acids all play a role in translation
- Translation regulated by many different factors, also (e.g., how many RNA transcripts are available)
_______________
Timing of gene expression is the key to development
Rate of gene expression determines the amount of product made
- Rate + timing of gene expression is the key to development and cell differentiation
