Recent news from the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory

Dr. Roy Stein will be retiring from OSU and the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory in 2007.

After nearly 30 years of service to The Ohio State University and the scientific community, Roy Stein is retiring from the Aquatic Ecology Lab.

Dr. Stein is well known for his research accomplishments in community ecology. He has explored how major ecological processes, such as competition, predation, and keystone species, structure communities in ecosystems as diverse as midwestern reservoirs, north temperate inland lakes, and the Great Lakes, and, in turn, how these findings can be used to manage these ecosystems. After serving as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Stein joined the Department of Zoology (now Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology) at The Ohio State University in 1976 as an Assistant Professor, where he became Professor in 1987, and currently serves as Director of the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory.

Dr. Stein has served as Associate Editor to scientific journals, has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, has received notable awards and grants for his scientific research, and has trained many students, now prominent professionals active in freshwater ecology and fishery management. He has served on research advisory panels to the National Science Foundation, the Lake Erie Protection Fund, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Undersea Research Center, the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center, and New York Sea Grant. Since his arrival at OSU, Dr. Stein has successfully developed and maintained a strong, collaborative relationship with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, through which long-standing fish management and research problems are addressed and jointly pursued. Throughout the 1990’s, he served on, then chaired, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission’s Board of Technical Experts (the GLFC’s research oversight committee). In 1998, Dr. Stein was appointed as a US Commissioner by President Bill Clinton and served in this position through 2004. Most recently, Dr. Stein received the prestigious Silver Eagle Award, which is given by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  This is the highest honor bestowed by Service's Great Lakes-Big Rivers Region for wildlife conservation and management.

Aquatic Ecology Laboratory attends 137th annual American Fisheries Society meeting in San Francisco, California.

Several members of the Aquatic Ecology Lab attended the 137th annual American Fisheries Society meeting. The AEL offers opportunities for both students and technicians to partake in the annual AFS meeting. This year, the lab fully utilized this opportunity by giving seven presentations. Presenters included current AELer's Jason Van Tassell, Paris Collingsworth, Cassandra May and Ben Sylak.  Presentations were also given by former AELer's Jennifer Cudney, Andrew Gascho-Landis and Jessica Best, who conducted their research while at the AEL.
