Graduate Research Opportunities

GRADUATE POSITIONS

We are seeking a Ph.D. student interested in developing ecological models and experiments that examine the life history and management of bluegill, a common, socially complex freshwater fish. Specifically, this project will address life-history variation in bluegill populations by combining individual-optimality and population-simulation models with experiments to understand how growth and maturation of individuals are influenced by social interactions within the population, resource variation, fishing mortality, and other factors. As such, this project contains both theoretical and empirical components and is suited for individuals interested in examining the ways that basic ecological data can be applied to conservation and management questions. Some experience with ecological models is preferred but not required.

This position is at the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory, Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology (EEOB), The Ohio State University. Graduate students in EEOB are supported either as Graduate Research Associates, Graduate Teaching Associates, or Graduate Fellows with a stipend of $1600/month and a tuition waiver. Closing date: Until filled, although applicants are encouraged to apply by 1 December 2004. Anticipated start date: Summer/Autumn 2005.

Interested students should apply according to instructions found at our departmental website: http://www.biosci.ohio-state.edu/~eeob/admiss.html. In addition, send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, names of three references, and transcripts to:

Dr. Derek Aday or Dr. Elizabeth Marschall

We are recruiting a M.S. student to work on a project focusing on the use of acoustic surveys to develop a detailed map of substrate in a freshwater impoundment and use telemetry to quantify seasonal use of habitat by saugeye. Additional information may be used to explore predator and prey-fish distribution across discrete time periods or seasons. The student will work closely with Ohio Division of Wildlife scientists in the development and execution of the project; those interested in the collection of basic ecological data for application to sportfish management are particularly encouraged to apply. Experience with fisheries acoustics or GIS is a plus but not necessary for this project.

Undergraduate Opportunities

  1. Independent Study (EEOB 693) - The Aquatic Ecology Laboratory is interested in energetic, committed undergraduate students who are interested in conducting independent research, for OSU credit, that focuses on ecologically oriented projects in freshwater ecosystems. For all projects, we ask students for, at minimum, a commitment of one year. For more information, please contact: Roy A. Stein (stein.4@osu.edu), Professor, EEOB or Elizabeth Marschall (marschall.2@osu.edu), Associate Professor, EEOB.
  2. Independent Study (EEOB 293) - The Aquatic Ecology Laboratory provides course credit for one quarter (or more) of volunteer research experience in aquatic ecology. For more information, please contact: Roy A. Stein (stein.4@osu.edu), Professor, EEOB or Elizabeth Marschall (marschall.2@osu.edu), Associate Professor, EEOB.
  3. Work Study - We are looking for qualified students to fill work-study positions at the AEL. Specific tasks for our Work-Study students include field sampling, in-lab sample processing, and data entry. We strive to assure that Work-Study students also will have opportunities to participate in lab and field research associated with other ongoing projects. AEL graduate students and faculty are committed to educating Work-Study students in the fine art of scientific research in a cooperative and supportive work environment. We are looking for students who think creatively and work hard.

    Requirements:
Federal Work-Study support (call 292-0300 for information)
    A course in biology
    An interest in aquatic ecology
