Announcing: Alice Nelson Kraus Undergraduate Scholarship in Environmental Biology
The Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology and the College of Biological Sciences are pleased to announce the initial competition of this undergraduate research scholarship. This program is designed for undergraduates in the biological sciences who will undertake faculty-guided research projects that make extensive use of the Kraus Wilderness Preserve in Delaware County. The Scholarships: We anticipate funding two scholarships per year, each of which will grant $1000 towards tuition and fees for the undergraduate student and $250 to the department to be used by the faculty advisor to defray the cost of the research activities themselves.
Eligibility: Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students who have declared a major in the College of Biological Sciences (CBS), have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, have completed a minimum of 15 hours in courses in biological sciences, and who have developed in concert with a CBS faculty member a research plan appropriate to the designated uses of the Kraus Wilderness Preserve. Recipients of Kraus scholarships must be enrolled in a minimum of 4 credits of EEOB 693 (or the equivalent in another department) and are expected to present the results of the research in the CBS and Denman Undergraduate Research Fora.
Application Procedures: Applications will consist of (1) a letter of application of no more than four pages from the student that reviews his/her academic history and describes in detail the research project, (2) a letter of support from the faculty member who will supervise and participate in the field portion of the project, and (3) a current student advising report. Review of Applications: Completed applications will be reviewed by the Advisory Committee of the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology. This group includes faculty, staff, and students, and represents a broad range of research areas within environmental biology.
Application Deadline: Applications for scholarships to be used either Summer or Autumn Quarter 2005 should be submitted no later than April 1, 2005.
