Entomology

Insects and their relatives are excellent models for understanding the biological world. They are easily found almost everywhere and they have strong impacts (direct and indirect) on the affairs of humans. Their small size and ease of handling make them valuable in conducting important, fundamental research. For example, research using the fruit fly (Drosophila) has helped us understand basic molecular genetics and physiology of development and survival

Since insects are ubiquitous, they are important in all ecosystems (natural and artificial). Much emphasis is placed on the "pest" status of some insects; therefore, research on the development of safe, effective pesticides as well as biological controls is essential to improving human standards of living around the world.

Entomologists must be among the best biologists, environmentalists and ecologists. A degree in entomology will prepare a student extremely well for the immediate work force as well as for advanced graduate and professional studies
