Dean's Undergraduate Research Fund
The College of Biological Sciences announces a program to provide mini-grants to encourage and support undergraduates engaged in research.
Eligibility
Any undergraduate with a major in the College of Biological Sciences engaged in research (generally enrolled in 693, 699 or H783); typically students should have achieved sophomore or higher status. The research project must be overseen by a tenure-track faculty member in the life sciences (including faculty in other Colleges).
Eligible expenses
Research materials (chemicals, glassware), services, and other expenses directly related to the conduct of the proposed research. No salary, stipends, or shared equipment are allowed.
Application Process
Students must complete an application form (available as PDF or a Word document) that is endorsed by the faculty advisor. The faculty advisor should supply a departmental account number for his or her lab. The application form must be accompanied by a research proposal of no more than two pages and an itemized budget, both written by the student and approved by the advisor. The College will add an unofficial transcript to the application materials for review.
Application Deadlines
Application deadlines will normally be at the end of the second week of each quarter. Please contact the College of Biological Sciences office (292-1704 or eakins.16@osu.edu) for exact deadlines.
Awards
Up to $300 per quarter per student
Priority
Priority will be given to first-time applicants and to sophomores/juniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
Review Process
The College of Biological Sciences Student Advisory Committee has primary responsibility for reviewing applications and making recommendations to the Dean. Awards will be announced within three weeks of the application deadline.
Award Disbursement
Funds will be transferred to the department of the student awardee's research advisor. Awards cannot be transferred to any other person or project.
Expectations
By the start of the quarter after the award was disbursed, the student will submit a report (at least one paragraph long) describing how the funds were expended to help his or her research. The requirement for a progress report is waived for students submitting another application for additional funding. In addition, student awardees will be expected to present their research at the College of Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Colloquium the next spring.
No student will be awarded more than three mini-grants from this source over the course of his/her undergraduate career at Ohio State.
Other sources of institutional support for undergraduate research include the Mayers Scholarship administered by the College of Biological Sciences; the Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Research Scholarship; the Pressey Fund administered by the Honors and Scholars Program; and programs administered by individual departments within the College and by other Colleges.
