Biological Sciences

Biochemistry

Biochemists study the chemical structures and dynamic processes of living systems. In recent years basic information gained in biochemical research has been applied with outstanding success to some of biology's most fundamental problems. In consequence, all students of biology benefit from a strong background in biochemistry.

The undergraduate biochemistry major is particularly suitable as a background for graduate study in biochemistry or other branches of chemistry or biology. The biochemistry major also provides a strong foundation for studies in the health science professions such as medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, or optometry.

Since the major requirements depend upon a strong background in chemistry, students wishing to major in Biochemistry should have at least a B average in Chemistry 121, 122, 123, 251, 252, 253, 254 and 255.

Careful selection of supporting courses will allow a biochemistry major to gain a strong background in biotechnology. Exciting career opportunities exist in industries that are developing new genetic engineering and biotechnological applications.

Visit our web site for more information about the department, courses, faculty and opportunities for study and research at http://www.biosci.ohio-state.edu/~biochem/ or call 614-292-6771.

We also invite all undergraduate majors to join the Biochemistry Club: contact Prof. Zucai Suo at 614-688-3706, or suo.3@osu.edu.
