Biochemistry Major (BS)

The biochemistry major focuses on the structure and function of biological macromolecules and the chemical reactions taking place in living organisms.

Part A. Required Prerequisites or Supplements to the Major (do not count toward 56 hour major)

  • Biology 113 (H115), 114 (H115)
  • Chemistry 121, 122, 123
  • Mathematics 151, 152, 153
  • Physics 131, 132, 133

Part B. Core Requirements

A minimum grade of "C-" in each course, and an overall grade point average of "C" (2.00) are required for graduation. The major is planned with a faculty advisor and is tailored to the background and interests of the student.

  • Chemistry 251, 252, 253, 254, 255, 221
  • Mathematics 254
  • Biochemistry 613, 614, 615, 521 (H521)
  • Molecular Genetics 500 (or 605 and 606)
  • Biochemistry 721.01, 721.02, 721.03 OR Chemistry 530, 531, 532*

*Mathematics 255 required for this sequence.

Part C. Electives within the Major
