Subject: Bio Sci Bldg AC update 6/6 AM

From: Steve Lawton

Date: 2008-06-06 08:36

I walked all floors of the Bio Sci Building this morning and all areas are overall satisfactory. The AC is holding well. A service tech was on site yesterday to assist FOD with repair of the second AC unit, but more time is required for its repair. However, I learned today that the two AC units in the penthouse are redundant; another unit is available in case one of the units should go down. One AC unit is sufficient for cooling the building, so we should be fine as long as the unit currently running continues operation. I choose to think that will be the case. As always, I'll send out any news as it arrives.

I've noticed that many Bio Sci Building laboratory lights are routinely left on overnight when no lab staff is present. This creates a significant and unnecessary heat load that taxes our already touchy AC system. Please turn off all unnecessary room lights and lab/office equipment when leaving for the day. This will provide a cooler room temperature when you arrive in the morning and significantly reduce the AC heat load building-wide. And, you'll be reducing OSU's electricity bill (which researchers ultimately pay for) and helping to reduce carbon dioxide emission. I sincerely appreciate your consideration on this matter.

Subject: Bio Sci Bldg AC update 6/5 AM

The one Bio Sci AC unit is still holding and cooling has continued overnight. I walked all floors of the building this morning, and the air is equal to or slightly better than it was yesterday at this time. As previously announced, repair of the second AC unit is scheduled for today. I'll send an update when I have news from FOD.

The Bio Sci Building currently is still cooled by one AC unit. A service tech from the manufacturer is coming tomorrow 6/5 to assist FOD in the repair of the second AC unit, which was not brought online today as anticipated. It is my hope that we'll have both AC units running by this time tomorrow. I'll send out an update as soon as I hear news from FOD.

The Bio Sci Building is currently being cooled by one AC unit, which was brought online about 7:00 pm last night. Cooling during the night helped to rid the building of some residual heat for a better morning today. FOD has identified the problem with the second AC unit and they're working on it now. There is a possibility that it may be working sometime this afternoon.

You may have noticed that the temperature in the Bio Sci Building is better this morning. I walked all floors earlier this morning and there's temperature improvement in all areas. I'm waiting on FOD to return my call with an update, which I'll send out as soon as I receive it. Stay tuned.

FOD has contacted me to say the AC unit's manufacturer's rep will be on-site this evening along with FOD people to attempt to resolve our AC woes.

I regret to announce that the Bio Sci Bldg AC has gone down again. FOD is currently in the penthouse working to revive it again. I'll send out an update as soon as I have news.

FOD has repaired one of the AC units (heat absorbers) and it is now running. The reason for its failure last night was determined and corrected, so it should remain running at maximum today and during the night for a better building temperature tomorrow morning. As previously announced, the second AC unit will be repaired late this week. Please know that the building will not receive optimal cooling with one unit running, but at least it is better than no cooling at all. I will send any updates re: the second AC unit as soon as I have news from FOD.

Everyone has been remarkably tolerant during the AC outage, and sincerely I thank you for your patience.

Obviously the AC went down again last night. FOD is now working on the problem, and I'm waiting to hear back from them. I'll send around a notice as soon as I have news.

Subject: UPDATE: Temp. in Bio Sci Building 6/2 AM

From: Steve Lawton

Date: 2008-06-02 10:29

I just received notice from FOD that both of the AC units (heat absorbers) in the penthouse had gone down sometime over the weekend. One of the units has been repaired and is now cooling. Room temps. in the building should improve somewhat during the next hour. The other unit requires more extensive repair and currently is expected to be online again Thursday or Friday of this week. I'll send out an update as soon as I receive news from FOD.

Some positive news... I've contacted the project manager of the supply air fan replacement job and requested that everything possible be done to bring in as much supply air as the existing supply fans can muster. One of the two new air intake fans in the basement is not yet working, but techs are coming in to get it going. This should help to improve the distribution of AC in the building. Also, the first new replacement supply air fan in the penthouse is expected to be operational by about mid June. It is larger that the existing fan now running, which should also help to increase supply air to the building.

I just finished walking all floors of the Bio Sci Building, and the entire building is overly warm as you've probably noticed by now. I have FOD coming over now to see if there is a problem with the AC system, or if the warm temps. are a product of reduced supply air due to the fan replacement project. I'll send out a notice again later this morning as soon as I have all the information.
