College of Biological Sciences Welcomes Third Ohio Eminent Scholar
The College is pleased to welcome Peng George Wang, the Ohio Eminent Scholar in Macromolecular Structure and Function, who joined the faculty in the Department of Biochemistry October 1, 2003. His laboratory and office are on the 8th floor of the Biological Sciences Building.
Wang comes to Ohio State from Wayne State University where he was a professor in the Department of Chemistry. Wang received his B.S. degree from Nankai University in China and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Wang is an expert glycobiochemist, i.e., the biochemistry of sugars, and has a broad range of research interests. His research projects involve the synthesis of complex carbohydrates and natural products using novel combinatorial chemistry and biosynthetic pathway engineering. Wang's lab has developed the "superbug" and "superbead" methodology for oligosaccharide synthesis. Additionally, Wang looks at the biological chemistry of nitric oxide and reactive nitrogen and oxygen species and the design and synthesis of enzyme and receptor inhibitors. Both areas of research have important implications for drug design. Wang has published more than 140 research papers, reviews and book chapters, and has submitted several patent applications. F. Robert Tabita, microbiology; and Stephen A. Osmani, molecular genetics, are the College's other Ohio Eminent Scholars.
