Sayre Receives Fulbright
A Fulbright Fellowship is taking Plant Cellular and Molecular Biology
Professor Richard Sayre to
Brazil for the months of June and July, where he will give a series of
lectures on biotechnology.
Also, he will continue research on the biochemistry of iron transporters.
Sayre and his students
recently discovered a novel one, which shows great promise for use in
cassava, one of the most
important food crops in underdeveloped countries. Now they want to figure
out how it works. The
great thing about this particular transporter, Sayre says, is that unlike
other iron transporters, it
doesn't move additional heavy metals, like cadmium, that might be present
in soils where there
are growing plants.
