Ohio Eminent Scholar Named AAAS Fellow
Stephen Osmani, Ohio Eminent Scholar and professor of molecular genetics, was one of 17 Ohio State researchers recently named fellows by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the largest scientific organization in the world. The rank of fellow is a designation that honors efforts toward advancing science in ways deemed to be scientifically or socially distinguished. Osmani studies cell cycle regulation and development, compelling because cell cycle regulation is fundamental to all life. Its disruptions or aberrations are pivotal in the occurrence of diseases such as cancer where cell cycle regulation has become deranged. Osmani is interested in the process of how this happens. "Once you understand how," he says, "we have a better chance of fixing it with treatment and cures." Osmani, a frequent lecturer at medical schools, continued, "It is difficult to predict how far away we might be from the day when we will be able to get specifically targeted and effective treatments. But, if you don't understand the process at the molecular level, it is not likely to happen."
