Bored? Try Bird Song!

10,241 recordings of sparrows, tanagers, and New World wood warblers from the Borror Collection are available for you to listen to on-line. According to Doug Nelson, director of the Borror Laboratory of Bioacoustics, this is part of an ongoing collaboration between the lab and the Digital Media Center at OhioLINK. The remaining 20,000 recordings in the collection—including insect sounds—will be added in the future. This project is supported by OhioLINK, a state-funded initiative that pools resources of Ohio libraries. Peter Murray and his programming crew at OhioLink are making this exciting function possible. This is the final product of a five-year project, funded with a $310,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, that allowed Nelson, his staff and students, to digitize all the recordings in the Borror Collection—the second largest collection of animal sounds in the country. The digitization of the entire collection was finished in February, 2003. To listen to the bird sounds, visit the lab homepage or go directly to the collection of recorded sounds at OhioLINK.
