Membership Policy

(22 August 2006)

Membership in the Institute of Mitochondrial Biology requires that the following general requirements are met: 

  1. Members must be involved in research and/or education, which is broadly related to the properties and roles of mitochondria in biological systems. 
  2. Members must be willing to participate in Institute activities, such as educational and scientific programs, administrative committees, fund raising, and interactions with other elements of the University. 

Specific requirements for membership by category

  1. Investigator
    • Active involvement in clinical or basic science research with aspects pertaining to mitochondrial biology. 
    • Principal investigator on a funded grant. 
  2. Associate Investigator
    • Active involvement in clinical or basic science research with aspects pertaining to mitochondrial biology. 
    • Any of the following conditions also met; a) seeking extramural funds to support research related to mitochondrial biology; b) co-investigator on a funded grant; c) author of an ongoing clinical research protocol related to mitochondrial biology; d) author of a peer-reviewed publication related to mitochondrial biology within the last year. 
  3. Assistant Investigator
    • Post-graduate fellow or trainee of an Institute member. 
    • Post-graduate fellow or trainee at The Ohio State University with an interest in mitochondrial research upon nomination by an institute member. 
    • Graduate student or Medical student at The Ohio State University upon nomination by an institute member. 
  4. Affiliated Physicians
    • Faculty Member of The Ohio State University or Columbus Children’s Hospital who treats patients afflicted with primary mitochondrial disorders or patients with other diseases having mitochondrial dysfunction as a significant component of the etiology. 
  5. External Members
    • Individuals actively involved in clinical or basic science research relating to mitochondrial biology who are not primarily affiliated with The Ohio State University.  Appointment to this category requires nomination by an institute member. 

Review Procedures

All memberships are effective upon approval by the Director and a majority of those serving on the Oversight Committee.  In addition, the Director and the Oversight committee will review the membership annually, with respect to the criteria listed above.  If a member no longer meets the criteria, he or she will be granted a two-year grace period to requalify and the situation will then be reevaluated.
