Computing Security: Project Overview
The Ohio State University has developed University Computer Security Standards (UCSS) that apply to all computer networks on campus. The UCSS are in addition to responses to recent exposures of sensitive data and the state's related legislation and to previously established policies governing the use of university networks. An upcoming State of Ohio Administrative Rule will also apply to us. The Computing Services group of the College of Biological Sciences is responsible for ensuring the adherence to these standards and policies of all computers and other network devices in use in the college.
The college's Computing Security project is our effort to bring all of our users and all of our computers and other network devices into compliance with all of the policies that apply to us. This web site is our vehicle to inform the college's computer users of the requirements contained in the policies and standards, explain how to comply, and report our plans and progress.
Complying with these policies and standards may change how Computing Services provides services to the college's users, and may change how our users do things with computers. It's difficult to forsee all the changes that compliance may entail; we expect this to be an evolutionary process. In fact, the policies and standards themselves may evolve with users' input and experience.
Because of the large scope (every computer in the college will need to be evaluated) and ambitious time frame (our final report for this phase is due on August 15, 2008) we will need to plan very carefully and we will rely on assistance from departments and programs. Because of all these issues (and more), we need to ask our users' forbearance.
