Dr. Venkat Gopalan is a recipient of the 2007-2008 Harlan Hatcher Memorial Award for Excellence, which is "presented in recognition of distinguished, sustained, and balanced achievements in the areas of teaching, research, and service. The purpose of the awards is to honor those individuals in the Arts and Sciences who, over a period of years, have developed a noteworthy profile, with exceptional strength in research and teaching, and who serve as role models for younger colleagues and students." As part of a three-member team that includes Amanda Simcox and Ruth Sesco, he is also a recipient of the Frontiers in Life Sciences Research: An Intellectual Exchange between OSU Students and Their National/International Peers, one of the Ohio State University's Continuing Education Course Development Grants, which "support faculty in adapting credit and noncredit courses delivered using nontraditional teaching and learning formats that target an expanded learner base and enhance access to postsecondary education."
Wen-Shan Lin, an undergraduate senior at Chung-Hwa University, Taiwan, joined the group in February 2008 as a visiting scholar and will stay for four months.
