This is an online interactive key to the land snails of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was constructed using Lucid Builder 2.1 within the Lucid Professional 2.1 package. It requires the Lucid Player to run it and the Key access file to interact with it. Both files are free and can be downloaded from this page. Required software This key requires the Lucid Player Standard, which may be downloaded for FREE. The program is ~26 Mb. You may also order the program on CD. With it you will be able to view this and other Lucid keys posted to the web. These include keys to corals, weeds, beetles, mites, and Australian aquatic invertebrates, among others. The Player can be downloaded as one large file for those folks with a fast connection. It may be downloaded as 2 Mb segments for those with slow connections (the site will time out after one hour of downloading any one file). There is also a Lucid Player Plus with many extra features. It costs US $15.95. To download the Player, click and choose the Lucid Player Standard option. If you are using AOL, left click and save it. If using Netscape or Internet Explorer, right click on the key access, pick "Save link target as..." or "Save page as... " and pick a place to save it. Left clicking on the name will only open the file as text. Click on the downloaded file to setup the Player. If you experience problems downloading or running the Player, please contact the good folks at Lucid, not me. IMPORTANT: We have found that Norton Personal Firewall may corrupt the download file. If you experience problems installing the Player, disable any firewall program you may have running. Note that disabling the firewall after downloading will not solve the problem. The Key Once you have downloaded and setup the Player, download the online Key access. This file is ~ 21Kb. If you are using AOL, left click and save it. If using Netscape or Internet Explorer, right click on the key access, pick "Save link target as..." or "Save page as... " and pick a place to save it. Left clicking on the name will only open the file as text. Once saved, run it. This file controls the Key and allows you to access it online. It does not have the hundreds of supporting files necessary to run it, so whenever you use the Key you must be online. Be sure to read the "About" page accessed from the toolbar. Start the key by clicking on the Key icon in the upper left. If at any time the panels are blank or only the Lucid splash screen is showing, click the Key icon. This may happen when navigating between keys and subkeys. To return from a subkey to the main key, click on the blue arrow icon in upper right. If you get an error along the lines of "Player could not associate key files..." the Key was corrupted during download. You will need to re-download it.
