Type locality: Ohio River, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Range: Mississippi River system; Gulf drainages from Leaf to Amite River systems.

Remarks: In the eastern Gulf drainages and across northern Florida this species is replaced by the much smaller, thinner, and compressed incrassata.

Typically a big river species.
