Fruit Bats in Florida
Heather Handley, one of the undergraduate students, spent last summer at an internship at the Lubee Foundation in Gainesville, Florida. Since Lubee is dedicated to preserving old-world fruit bats, she was able to get pictures of bats we don't normally get to see in the U.S.
A group of straw-colored fruit bats (Eidolon helvum). |
A Rodrigues Fruit Bat (Pteropus rodricensis), a highly endangered species found only on a single island. |
A Little Golden-mantled Flying fox (Pteropus pumilus). This species is found only in the Philippines. |
This bat is a Malayan Flying Fox (Pteropus vampyrus). It is the largest bat in the world, and is capable of attaining wingspans greater than 6 feet! |
This little guy was born at Lubee while our student was visiting... |
