Flying Big Brown Bats!

All of these pictures were taken in the anechoic chamber where we run our experiments and exercise our animals.  The yellow, lumpy stuff you see on the walls and ceiling is sound absorbent foam that helps to decrease the echoes coming back to the bat.

This is Norbert, he's a big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) who was caught in a house near the Ohio State Campus.

Another shot of  Norbert.  He's just flown by, so you're seeing him as he flies away.  This picture shows all the bones in his wings.

Here's Brain, another big brown bat from the OSU campus.  You can see her finger bones here.  Her mouth  is open because she is echolocating.

This is Brain swooping up from the floor, coming right at the camera.

Brain is busy showing off her aerial ability.  She was flying very low here, only about 2-3 inches above the floor.

Using her bio-sonar Brain detects the wall and takes evasive action!
