Financial Assistance

JOHNSTON FUND AT OSU
Limited financial assistance may be available to graduate students or international participants from the D.E. Johnston Memorial Fund. Assistance will be in the form of a partial waiver of registration only. Travel or per diem funds are not available. A written statement of need and how the workshop will augment your career is required for consideration.

WHARTON FUND AT OSU
An endowment fund was established at OSU by the founder of the Acarology Summer Program, the late George Wharton. This endowment funds a $700 scholarship to encourage promising researchers in acarology to participate in the Summer Program. The award is based on merit only. Application is open to all participants although some preference may be given to young acarologists. Unlike the Hoogstraal Fund this award is presented prior to the start of the Summer Program.

To apply for the Johnson or Wharton Fund applicants should send the following to OSU:
  1. A letter, fax or e-mail from the applicant giving background, interests and accomplishments (publications, presentations, grants) with a description of how attending the Acarology Summer Program will augment a career in acarology.

  2. A letter, fax or e-mail by the student's advisor or supervisor addressing the scholarly potential of the applicant in acarology, and the student's financial need.

Awards will be in the form of fee waivers.

    Deadline: April 15, 2009

HOOGSTRAAL FUND AT OSU
Family and friends of the late Harry Hoogstraal established an endowment fund at OSU to honor his outstanding career, which included 5 years of teaching in the workshop (1977-81). This $700 scholarship is to encourage participation by young scholars with a financial need. This scholarship is based on performance during the workshop(s). Applicants should bring the following to OSU:
  1. A letter by the student giving background, interests and accomplishments (publications, presentations, grants) with a description of how attending the Acarology Summer Program will augment a career in acarology.

  2. The student's advisor should send a letter addressing the scholarly potential of the applicant in acarology.

The student should turn-in these materials upon arrival at the workshop. Announcement of the recipient will be made at the conclusion of the workshop.

Application to all three sources of funding is allowed and encouraged, but an individual can only receive a Johnston Award, and either a Wharton or a Hoogstraal Scholarship.

ADDITIONAL SOURCES OF SUPPORT
Outside support may be obtained through the Joseph A. Camin Fellowship, sponsored by the Entomological Foundation. This award is specifically intended to support graduate students interested in research on the systematics of mites and ticks. The fellowship will assist students at the graduate level to attend the Acarology Summer Program at OSU or an equivalent institution where training may be obtained in the systematics of acarines. The award is given annually with the value depending on the interest earned by the endowment. For details on eligibility and application procedures, check the Web sites of the Acarological Society of America or the Entomological Foundation.
